No Cure

**Potential Trigger warning for graphic depictions**

No Cure is a straight-edge metal band from Birmingham, Alabama, formed in 2021. One of the writers and guitarists is a trans woman, also from Alabama. Existing in the very religious setting of the Southern United States, as a queer person, it can be very disheartening to hear your existence preached against time and time again, so safe to say No Cure’s stance on religion is understandable.

"Let thy will be done

It speaks to you with a severed tongue

Your prophet, It whimpers

Peel back the skin of divinity (Set me free)"

No Cure reframes the concept of Christianity as a whole. They highlight the hypocrisy of the leaders while undermining their credibility. No Cure shifts the traditional frame of view by “peel[ing] back the skin of divinity,” showing their listeners that religion is not the only path to take in life and that you can be “set... free.”

"Asphyxiate on the belt worn thin

It all feels like heaven when you're burning again"

This line can have multiple meanings. The first being that being a “sinner” is enjoyable, and everything is better or “heaven” when you give your life over to "sin," or a non-traditional life. In a way, the band is reclaiming the idea of hell, or the ultimate form of punishment in Christianity, by likening it to heaven, yet again telling listeners that there are other options to religion.

"Suffocate me, mutilate me

I clench my teeth and embrace the pain

Can't get out

So I choose the chain

Until the rope breaks"

This line implies that they would rather suffer death than be “mutilated” and “suffocated” by traditional Christianity, further emphasizing their stance.
